Nativity School is very proud of the achievements that its students (and Teachers) have made in terms of academic excellence in various competitions. These are some of the examples where our students have brought great pride to our school. Congratulations to Mrs. Amy Nowakowski, who received the Veterans of Foreign Wars Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year Award! Mrs. Nowakowski was presented with a plaque from the Local VFW Post 6664. This award recognizes top teachers in grades K through 12, whose citizenship education topics promote America’s history, traditions, and institutions. Mrs. Nowakowski was nominated for this award because of the many methods she uses to engage her students in our history and culture. This includes Nativity’s student council election process, which mirrors actual elections with voter registration, districts, and balloting. Students receive a grade for their participation in the annual VFW Patriot’s Pen contest, which has resulted in awards for our students. And the 7th and 8th grade classes recently researched and wrote essays about great Americans whose contributions improved our country and society, such as Henry Ford, Sojourner Truth, Thomas Edison, Sitting Bull, and Andrew Carnegie. Mrs. Nowakowski is well-known for ‘staying late at the office’. And she is always available to her students, both current and past. How appropriate that she be recognized for her knowledge and creativity. Mrs. Nowakowski is now eligible to receive an award at the state-wide level, and she could progress to national recognition. Mrs. Nowakowski teaches Nativity’s Middle Level grades. We are extremely proud of her, and honored to have her on our staff. And Now For Our Student Sucesses! November 2006:

The first place winners move on to State finals, held at Penn State main campus in May. Many of these students will also be competing in the Mon Yough Science Fair, and the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair, both held in March. These projects require many hours of diligent research, data collection, and presentation practice, and the students are guided by Mrs. Laird and Mrs. Nowakowski. Every one of them is a winner!
Sarah Has the Power! Seventh grader Sarah Adler qualified to represent our school at the State finals of the Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge. First place winners at the State level compete for the National title in Orlando Florida.
